Peace wall in Belfast
The peace lines are a series of separation barriers in Northern Ireland that separate Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods. They have been built at urban "interface areas" in Belfast, Derry, Portadown and elsewhere. The stated purpose of the barriers is to minimize inter-communal violence between Catholics (who mainly self-identify as Irish) and Protestants (who mainly self-identify as British), and between nationalists and unionists.
